Video Copilot’s must-have FX Console plugin is here to speed up your After Effects workflow.
Video Copilot’s new FX Console After Effects plugin allows you to work much faster. The plugin was designed for Andrew Kramer to speed up his work in AE. Kramer says, “Imagine if you had four arms. It would look kinda weird, but imagine how much work you could get done.”
The FX Console toolset is only a keyboard shortcut away, which allows you to type in effects or presets to apply them directly to any layer. The concept is similar to applying nodes in Blender or NUKE. The keyboard shortcut that pulls up the console is also customizable, so you can map the keys to the ones you want.
The goal was to eliminate time wasted searching for effects andallow users to customize the tools to their needs. If you’re an old school AE user and still refer to newer effects by their old names, you can also create aliases to help you find them faster.
Another incredibly helpful tool is the ability to change the default effects to your liking. For example, Kramer shows how he changed the Fractal Noise settings to his liking. That way when he applies the effect, it appears as he wants. To do so, you’ll just save the preset, and then add an Override to the FX Console.
There are also nine numerical shortcuts within the FX Console to add your most used effects or presets. You can just pull up the FX Console, then hit the corresponding number on the keyboard — done. Boom! Instant effect.
Finally, FX Console has the ability to create snapshots in After Effects, so you can easily export a file (or multiple files) and send proofs to clients. It’s also great to grab a few snapshots while you work, so you can review your progress and see what design changes you like and which you don’t.
