> DeclineTomtom upgrade free to Truck Mode
There are probably a lot of One XL owners around, as it’s a very popular GPS device, sold all around the word. Although it packs some years behind its back, it is still highly used thanks to its very good specs and permanently updated TomTom navigation software.
Today we’ll show a way to convert TomTom XL into a truck-ready navigator, including the adequate maps. Basically, we will install a truck software from TomTom, along with the latest maps including heavy-vehicle restrictions.
It might be a little difficult to tackle this situation since the navigator does not have an SD card slot and the internal memory is just 2GB.
Below, we will list the steps on how to install the firmware and maps on a 64MB RAM TomTomXL – there are also 32MB RAM versions, but these will probably lag a lot when running the firmware. The amount of installed RAM can be checked in the Settings menu.
If you think the method below is quite complicated, you should read our guide on how to update Tom Tom maps for free – 3 Methods.
Before we proceed – instead of updating an old device, you might also consider buying a new TomTom Truck Navigation System with the latest maps and free updates. Such a device is this one :
Tom Tom Trucker 600
It has free truck maps update for life and you’ll get best routes for your vehicle type depending on size, weight, cargo and speed. It’s quite a cheap truck gps with an average price of 200 Usd.
Backup TomTom XL
The first step is to do a backup of the original firmware, in case something goes wrong. Connect the GPS to a computer and copy its entire contents on the hard drive. After the backup has successfully completed, you must erase the entire memory of the GPS.
You may as well format the device, but be careful only to use FAT or FAT 32 file system.
Install Truck software on TomTom
TomTom truck software, free download
Now, we can proceed towards installing the truck firmware on TomTomXL, using a custom software provided by a GPS junkie fan.
Download the software using this link, unzip it, then run the install.exe executable.
A new window will pop up prompting you to choose which navcore version you want installed.
For 64MB RAM TomTom XL we chose the last option on the list – Truck XL.
You may go ahead and choose whichever navcore you want – however this was the only one that worked for me.
After selecting the software, press the Install button, and another window will pop-up.
There, choose the install location – in our case, the root folder of the GPS. It should take a couple of minutes before the installation is complete.
After install
Once the install is complete, disconnect your TomTom XL from the computer.
WARNING: Do not disconnect your GPS until the X symbol disappears, as otherwise you would remove the device while its memory is still being accessed, leading to corruption of data.
The GPS will restart. The first boot will take longer than usual, as the GPS will configure the new files and write settings into the ttgo.bif configuration file.
It’s perfectly normal that, upon boot up, you will receive an error stating you do not have any voice or maps installed.
If everything worked as planned, you now have a fully functional TomTom XL firmware that routes in truck mode, with height, weight and no of axles settings.
Tomtom Usa Maps Free Download
Next up, let’s add proper maps for navigation.
There are special truck-maps for Europe, as well for some US states. The EU map will need to be adjusted, as the GPS internal memory cannot accommodate it in its entire.
The truck map for TomTom is over 2GB, while the GPS has less than 2GB of storage available. We will remove certain map files such as voice, chspeech and points of interest, leaving just what we absolutely need – restrictions for heavy vehicles.
If you do however need points of interest, you can add them in OV2 format, which takes less space. You can download these from dedicated websites such as poiplaza.com.
Thus, download or buy Europa Truck 925.5445 map (or newer, if you are reading this article a while after it has been written), then open the map’s folder using your computer.
Delete the following folders and files: poi, crpoi, cspeech, cphoneme. After removing these files, the map should comfortably fit within the GPS internal memory.
If, by any chance, it is still too large for the device, try using an older map (Europe Truck 915 or 910.xxx) – which will without a doubt fit after deleting the above-mentioned files.
TomTom devices featuring an SD card slot will accompany the entire map without needing to remove a part from it.
Once the map was shrunk, we will copy the folder to the GPS internal memory, now named Truck. It will take a while to copy all the files, as the file transfer speed towards the device is rather low. Once the map has been copied, it’s time to activate it for use. If you’ve bought the map from official channels, you may skip this step. Otherwise, here’s how to do it.
Activate Free Truck Map on TomTom
Download a truck map activator from the internet. The software is called Fast Activate, and you can download it from here.
Copy the executable file to the internal memory of the device.
Now run the executable and a pop-up window will appear.
Select Patch Maps, Voices. In a few seconds, a pop-up message will let you know that the map has been activated successfully.
If the activation was successful, you may now check the new navcore and map in the Settings menu. There you have it: a fully functional TomTom XL navigator with truck routing.
You may add voices from the internet, or you can download the official TomTom Home software. You may use it to install a vocal guidance file. Do not try to add too many third-party files; you otherwise risk overloading the routing and cause it to lag.
After loading the voice, we may can personalize the device using the specs of the truck: weight, height, length, axles.
These options are visible in the settings of the new software, including the menu you are using to start a new trip.
Check the pictures below on how to select a truck profile before starting a trip.

Wait a few minutes for the device to connect to satellites in range (you may also install QuickGPS Fix if it’s offered as an update for TomTom Home – leading to faster connection), then you are ready to use TomTom XL as a professional driver. Good luck!
